Two recently released studies in the prestigious British Medical Journal show oral contraceptives including Yaz and Yasmin cause a dramatic increase in the risk of blood clots. The data indicates users of the pills are 6.3 times more likely to suffer blood clots that can lead to dangerous health problems such as heart arrhythmia, heart attacks and strokes.

The popular birth control pills both contain drospirenonem, a progestin that increases the level of potassium in users. Potassium helps regulate heartbeats. Elevated levels of potassium can lead to the medical condition known has hyperkalemia, which can cause potentially fatal heart rhythms (arrhythmia). The increased potassium can also raise the risk of developing gall bladder disease.

Bayer, maker of both Yaz and Yasmin, was earlier this year forced by the federal Food and Drug Administration to air commercials correcting misleading information contained in the company's earlier ads. According to the FDA, those earlier, misleading commercials failed to give viewers adequate warnings of the dangers of Yaz and Yasmin, as well as deceptively giving the impression that the drugs were approved for use in treatment of PMS (premenstrual syndrome).

The recent research indicates Yaz and Yasmin are no more likely to prevent pregnancy than birth control pills containing levonorgestrel. Because the pills are equally effective at preventing pregnancy, researchers said their studies indicate the choice of oral contraceptives should be based on the lowest risk of side effects such as venous thrombosis (a blood clot inside a vein).

Those clots can lead to a blockage of the supply of blood to the brain, causing a stroke, or block obstruct an artery and cause myocardial infarction (heart attack).

If you or a loved one has suffered an injury such as heart attack or stroke while taking Yaz or Yasmin, consult a product liability attorney who can help assess your legal options.
