More Children with Congenital Heart Disease to Benefit from A-Heart for A-Heart Program
"Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur celebrates the success of its 14 year- old charity program"
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, August 07, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- 569 children born with congenital heart disease have benefitted from generous public donations through Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur and New Straits Times' 'A-Heart for A-Heart' charity program since its inception 14 years ago.
Through this unique charity program, which was initiated in 1996, millions of ringgit raised from public donations has been channeled to support the medical costs for those children who cannot afford corrective surgery.
"A big thank you to members of the public for their generosity in supporting this campaign for the past 14 years. The 'A-Heart for A-Heart' charity program has successfully touched the hearts of the public to contribute after the plight of these young patients was highlighted in the New Straits Times," said Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur Chief Executive Officer Amir Firdaus Abdullah during the program's anniversary celebration today.
"With other media such as Sin Chew and Nanyang Siang Pau coming forward to highlight their hardships, more corrective surgeries have been made possible," added Amir.
However, Amir said, the generous support from all parties; public and corporate is extremely important for this program to continue helping children with congenital heart disease.
"In Malaysia, it is estimated that at least 5,000 children could be at risk of suffering from congenital heart disease yearly. Cost is always the prohibitive factor for these children to seek treatment. Our charity programme will not be successful without continuous support from the corporate companies, non-governmental organisations and the general public.
They have certainly played an important role in helping to save these children lives. We hope that they will continue to support our charity programme and be our partner in helping the less fortunate."Amir said this after the inauguration of the hospital's new paediatric ward by YM Tengku Mariam Zaharah binti al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Iskandar. The new ward compromising of 22 beds will add to the current 28-bed paediatric ward capacity.
