Jeri Ruth Plum Celebrated in Publishing, Horse Breeding and Nursing
Jeri Ruth Plum discusses her experiences managing three successful careers

LONG BEACH, CA, March 16, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ --Jeri Ruth Plum, Author and Owner of Unicorn Stable, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of her career.

Author, nurse, animal breeder—over the last four decades, Jeri Ruth Plum has forged a career in three distinctly different fields. And if you ask her how she became interested in such varying professions, she will tell you about her childhood. A sickly child, Jeri relied upon the care of nurses throughout most of her youth. The wonderful concern with which they tended to her fostered within Jeri a strong desire to nurture others, and being an only child, she naturally turned to animals. In an exclusive interview, she noted "I turned to animals for friendship, playmates and comfort...When humans failed me, animals were always there." Jeri's early experiences of caring for her pets ultimately played a shaping role in her adult life.

Becoming a licensed vocational nurse certified in intravenous therapy, Jeri would work as an emergency room nurse for the next 35 years. At the Los Angeles Children's Hospital, she demonstrated the same steadfast care she was shown by her own nurses as a child. She recalled one particular patient, a young girl suffering from cancer; each night, Jeri would sit by her bedside and tell the girl stories about her pet wolf. Eventually, the girl went into remission and graduated from college, determined to follow Jeri's footsteps into nursing. Another memorable case from Jeri's tenure in the emergency room was that of a young man, pronounced dead due to a gang-related stab wound. After he had been worked on for nearly an hour, Jeri began to remove his intravenous catheters. At this point, she remembered, the patient squeezed her hand. Three months after his recovery, the man returned to the hospital to thank her and tell her about the new life he had started for himself.

Even as a busy healthcare professional, Jeri's dedication to animals never wavered. In 1976, the same year she completed nursing school, she opened the Unicorn Stable, a hoarse boarding and breeding facility providing horses for show, pleasure riding and quarter horse racing. With almost superhuman strength, Jeri was able to fit into her schedule enough time to board, feed, clean and doctor such horses, as well as care for her ranch. After she had realized her dream of breeding show stallions, she began writing the stories of her childhood. The first of her books, "My Nanny was a Wolf," was published by AuthorHouse in 2008. Her other works will include "My Guardian Angel Wore Wolf's Clothing," a story of a young wolf that goes to war in Afghanistan, and "Night Nurse: The Unsung Heroes of a Los Angeles Gang Hospital Emergency Room."

"It never ends - it just gets better," smiled Jeri at the proposition that she might retire from any of her three careers in the next few years. With a flourishing niche in writing, the part-time recovery nurse and continued owner and operator of Unicorn Stable plans to continue growing and developing in all of her current capacities. In addition to her many hats, Jeri is also a happy family woman with three daughters and a 4-year-old grandson, who lives with her. She is proud to mention that her eldest grandson, Aaron, recently returned from Afghanistan, where he served as sergeant in the U.S. Army's Special Forces. He has received two commendations, three Medals of Valor and a Purple Heart. Hypothesized Jeri, "I think he survived the war mentally and physically because he was raised [according] to wolf rules...He is truly a warrior, protecting his 'pack.'"
