New Hyde Park, NY, May 24, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ --Steven Schneider, MD, a pediatric neurosurgeon with The Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center and Long Island Neurosurgical Associates, P.C, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in image-guided microneurosurgery for tumors of the brain, brainstem and spinal cord, combined with functional mapping of the nervous system.

Dr. Schneider has been a practicing pediatric neurosurgeon for 20 years. He is also involved in academia, teaching residents and medical students in pediatric neurosurgery. He joined Long Island Neurosurgical Associates, where he became the first fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon on Long Island and still remains a senior partner. He deals with epilepsy, brain tumors and hydrocephalus. He is one of 150 neurosurgeons in the United States that is Board Certified in both Adult and Pediatric Neurosurgery. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in image guided microneurosurgery for tumors of the brain, brainstem & spinal cord combined with functional mapping of the nervous system to remove tumors once thought inoperable; or for the surgical treatment of epilepsy; or with neuroendoscopy for the minimally invasive treatment of hydrocephalus.

Dr. Schneider is a pioneer in the development & use of resorbable materials for reconstructive craniofacial surgery for craniosynostosis; the surgical treatment of chronic pain & movement disorders including spasticity; the evaluation & treatment of brachial plexus injuries & peripheral nerve reconstruction; neural tube defects including spina bifida, laminectomy for tethered spinal cord & lipomas; vascular malformations; traumatic injuries of the brain & spinal cord; and the evaluation & treatment of Chiari malformations. Dr. Schneider's primary focus is on pediatric neurosurgery, however he maintains an active adult practice which specializes in pediatric disorders found in adulthood as well as functional neurosurgery.

Dr. Schneider founded the pediatric neurosurgery division at North Shore University Hospital. He is currently the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery for The Steven & Alexandra Cohen' Children's Medical Center (formerly known as Schneider Children's Hospital) at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is the Co-Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery of the Department of Neurosurgery for North Shore - LIJ Healthcare System and the Director of Pediatric Epilepsy Surgical Services at the Harvey Cushing Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Schneider is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery for the Hofstra University School of Medicine and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery for the NYU School of Medicine. He is the Emeritus Director of the Neurosurgical Residency Program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the Emeritus Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Nassau University Medical Center.

Dr. Schneider is active in multiple surgical societies and organizations covering the gamut of pediatric and functional neurosurgery. He serves on the advisory council of several foundations and is active in clinical research. He is an Assistant Researcher at the Feinstein Institute of Medical Research. This research has resulted in numerous journal and book publications, presentations & awards. He serves as an ad hoc editor for multiple scientific journals including Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dr. Schneider graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in 1982, receiving his medical degree with high honors. He remained at Baylor College of Medicine and completed a neurosurgical residency program in 1988. Seeking additional specialty training he joined world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Fred Epstein for a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at NYU.

Dr. Schneider has been a Diplomat of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons since 1992, a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery since 1997, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1994, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics since 1995 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. He also belongs to the following professional advisory councils: Children's Brain Tumor Foundation, Epilepsy Foundation and Think First Foundation. His professional affiliations include the Pediatric Neurosurgical Societies, American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, and AANS-Joint Section Pediatric Neurosurgery. He is also involved with the following functional neurosurgical societies: American Epilepsy Society, American Academy of Pain Medicine, AANS-Section on Pain, American Modulation Society and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Association. Additionally, he maintains affiliation with the following neurosurgical societies: Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, New York State Neurosurgical Society and New York Society of Neurosurgery. Other societies of which Dr. Schneider is a member include the Hydrocephalus Association, Guardians of Hydrocephalus, National Neurofibromatosis Foundation, American Syringomyelia Alliance Project, AANS-Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine & Peripheral Nerves, and Children's Oncology Group. Lastly, Dr. Schneider is a member of the Nassau County Medical Society and American Medical Association.
